Child’s dress, c. 1920-1929

Client

FIT Graduate Studies Collection

Goals of treatment

To improve the object’s overall appearance and to create an appropriate storage method, in order to facilitate future study

Summary of treatment

Prior to treatment, this silk crepe dress exhibited signs of fiber degradation and soiling at the edges of its ribbon embroidery. The dress was washed in tepid, de-ionized water, humidified to relieve creasing, and prepared for boxed storage with other objects in the FIT Graduate Studies collection. An almost identical dress is held by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1975.43.2).
